Phil Mickelson Hates The FedEx Cup

Posted by The Common Golfer

Phil and TigerCongratulations to Phil Mickelson, who shot an amazing 65 to win the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club.  But make no bones about it, Mickelson is not a fan of the playoffs format, saying something to the effect of:

“Let me see if I get this straight.  I shoot 65 and beat Tiger, he gets $10 million, and I only get $1 million?  No, I’m just kidding…”

What’s crazy to me is how no one is making a bigger deal about this.  I’m paraphrasing Mickelson’s comments on NBC after winning, because nobody has the actual comment on their sites!  The only comments I was able to find were something a little bit calmer that I’m assuming Mickelson said later at the press conference, where he basically says he’s happy to have a scenario where he and Tiger both win money.

I don’t have a problem with Phil’s comments…but hopefully word gets back to Tim Finchem.  Yesterday’s outcome may have been a “dream scenario” for the PGA Tour with Tiger and Phil both winning at the same time, but it says a lot when neither of your champions is enthused with the playoff system at all!

Yesterday’s final round was exciting to watch, and it was great to see golf’s two biggest stars in the limelight.  Everything seemed to “work itself out.”  But much like the BCS for college football, if the format isn’t changed, one of these years we’re going to end up with a disaster (like Heath Slocum winning the playoffs that he has no business even being a part of in the first place).

Tiger Starts Actually Trying

Posted by The Common Golfer

Tiger FedEx Trophy 211x300 Tiger Starts Actually TryingTiger Woods hasn’t looked excellent over the past few weeks, because frankly – he hasn’t cared about those tournaments.  I understand that Tiger’s a fierce competitor, and he would like to win every tournament he enters.  But the fact is, the first two events of the FedEx Cup are meaningless when you’re #1 in the world.  If Tim Finchem didn’t practically demand that the tour’s marquee players attend all playoff events, you can almost guarantee Tiger wouldn’t have been playing in Boston last week.  And he definitely would have skipped round 1 at Liberty National in New Jersey.

This week, things are different.  Steve Stricker has continued to play lights out and has now displaced Tiger at #1 in the FedEx standings.  If Tiger wants a shot at the $10 million purse at The Tour Championship, he needs to play well at Cog Hill this week to ensure he stays in the top 5 of the standings.

Not only is the title of FedEx Champion something that belongs more than once on the resume of the greatest golfer of all time, but there is added incentive for Tiger.  Despite winning 5 times this year, he has not won a major.  Winning the FedEx would help ease the pain of a major-less year.  Sure, Stricker has looked great in the playoffs so far…but he’s been playing against an un-motivated Woods.  There is no doubt in my mind, that Woods will keep his foot on the gas this weekend and through the entire Tour Championship.  It wouldn’t surprise me to see Woods win by a landslide next week.

FedEx Disaster: Ted Purdy Will Win Deutsche

Posted by The Common Golfer

fedexillustration 300x225 FedEx Disaster: Ted Purdy Will Win DeutscheWho?  Yes , you’re reading correctly – Ted Purdy will be this week’s winner at TPC Boston.  How can I be so sure that a guy with only one top 10 finish all year will suddenly win?  Because that is the only outcome possible that can make the FedEx Playoffs more absurd!

Heath Slocum seems like a great guy and all, but how the hell does the #124 player pull a victory out of his ass, and climb all the way to #3?  So we’re now operating under the assumption that Slocum should be ranked higher than Phil Mickeslon (#10 with 2 victories this year), and US Open champion Lucas Glover (#9), just to name a few?

This just in:  Jean Van De Velde just outscored his three buddies in their weekend foursome (I assume that’s what he’s doing these days), and has now catapulted to #5 in the FedEx standings!  Can you believe it?

If this is the sort of drama the tour is trying to create, they might as well take the FedEx standings at the end of the season, flip them upside down, and see if Tiger can claw his way from last place all the way to the top in four weeks.  The PGA will need to make some serious changes soon, or they risk having a disaster much like the BCS system in college football.  The last thing we need is the field of 35 at the Tour Championship filled out with people like James Nitties, Mark Leishman, Kevin Streelman, and Scott Piercy (actual players no one has heard of, that still have a chance in the playoffs).  *disclaimer:  no offense to any of the players above.  I’m sure they’re great guys

Jim Furyk Forfeits $131,250

Posted by The Common Golfer

_44561765_furyk416How much does it cost to carry a 15th club in your bag?  $131,250 and 188 FedEx points.  That is the final damage for Jim Furyk, after discovering a 15th club in his bag on Saturday of the Barclays.  He realized the error near the green of the second hole, and was penalized 4 strokes (2 per hole).  He still finished with a 70 for the day, but without the 4-stroke penalty would have finished the tournament in sixth place rather than fifteenth…resulting in a huge pay cut.

Furyk had been practicing on the range with a 60 degree wedge with extra bounce, and thought he may need that with all the run-off areas around the greens at Liberty National.  However, he decided to stay with his normal 60 degree wedge.  In the process, there was a lack of communication between Furyk and caddie Mike “Fluff” Cowan. Shake Up In The FedEx Cup Standings

Posted by The Common Golfer

fedexcup Shake Up In The FedEx Cup StandingsCongratulations to Heath Slocum on his victory at the Barclays.  Slocum definitely played well down the stretch, winning with a 21+ foot putt.  His victory vaulted him from 121 to #3 in the FedEx Cup standings, which nearly ensures his participation in The Tour Championship in three weeks.

Other big movers were Ernie Els, who moved from 47 to 11, and Padraig Harrington, who moved from 66 to 14.  The 125 player field at the Barclays will now be whittled down to 100 for the Deutsche Bank Championship next week.  Barely missing the “cut,” at numbers 101-110 are K.J. Choi, Ben Curtis, Chris Riley, Harrison Frazar, George McNeill, Matt Bettencourt, Bill Lunde, Michael Allen, Robert Garrigus, and Adam Scott.

The biggest shockers on the list of players not to advance to next week are K.J. Choi, and Adam Scott who probably can’t wait for this horror of a year to be over.  I look for both to rebound and return to prominence next season.

Players Don’t Like Barclay’s Course

Posted by The Common Golfer

LibertyNationalGolfClub 300x180 Players Dont Like Barclays CourseIf Liberty National Golf Club (host of this week’s FedEx Cup Barclays) is one thing, it’s a great reclamation project.  What it is not, is a desired destination for many of the tour players.  One prominent Tour player earlier this year said it would be the worst course his fellow golfers would play in 2009. Another joked it will be the best course he’ll play this week.

PGA Tour Listens to The Common Golfer

Posted by The Common Golfer

I would like to commend the PGA Tour for listening to my complaints about their  iPhone app for the PGA Championship.  Every body makes mistakes, and charging $1.99 for that app was a huge one.  But I accept your apology, Mr. Finchem, and I commend your decision to make the latest iPhone app for the FedEx Cup Playoffs free.

The PGA Tour has released this app in partnership with Nike Golf, and it includes the following:

  • Live video from select holes and groups
  • Customizable leaderboards
  • Individual profiles of each hole on the courses
  • Live player updates
  • Complete round video highlights

You now have no excuse for being always up to date on what is going on in the playoffs.  Now that I have the Tour’s ear, next I’ll work on getting them to stream live coverage of more tournaments than the majors (it’s a lot easier at the office to watch golf on my computer than my iPhone).

You can download the app here.
