Ryan Moore Is An Idiot

Posted by The Common Golfer

0028617606.01. SCMZZZZZZZ Ryan Moore Is An IdiotSo he seems like a great guy, and I still mean everything I said about being happy that Ryan Moore won his first PGA event.  However, let me be the first to announce that something is a bit loose in Moore’s head.  According to Golf.com, he is throwing away $300,000 to $500,000 per year!

Moore prefers to use his own gear, and has paid for everything in his bag and everything he wears.  ”I pick a club because I want to play, not because I have to make it work. To me, there is a lot of comfort and a lot of confidence in that,” Moore said. “Everything you see me wearing, I paid for.”  But take a look at these sponsorship estimates:

The Hat — $200,000
Tour Agent: “He should have kept his Ping hat, even for free. Get on good terms with a company and you might be rewarded later.”

Chest logo —$50,000
Tour Agent: “They’re not easy to get, but corporate logos can bring big bucks because they’re so visible on TV.”

The Bag — $50,000
Tour Agent: “Bags don’t pay much, because they’re not always visible. Could be a tough—but not impossible—sell for a mixed bag of clubs.”

Golf.com went on to say that an exclusive sponsorship deal with one company could bring in even more than $500,000.  I suppose I get what he’s saying, when it comes to equipment.  I’ve often wondered how some players can play with every club from the same company, when typically the best drivers aren’t made by the same companies that make the same putters.  But what’s wrong with taking a backwards approach?  If you’re favorite golf ball is a Titleist, then wear a Titleist hat!  If your cell phone provider is AT&T, then put an AT&T logo on your bag!  I know I’m over-simplifying what is probably a complex process…but you get the idea.  While I, myself, would have no problem being a corporate whore for money, there are plenty of ways to go about getting sponsors while still keeping your dignity!

What do you think?  If anyone reading this can honestly say that they would turn down $500k per year, just to “not be a billboard,” I would love to hear from you.  Please comment!

  2. Chris Said,

If you think he pays for the clubs in the bag you are naive. ALL Tour players get free clubs, bottom line

    Michelle,

Thank you for the comment! There is something to be said for having your integrity. I still don’t see why Moore couldn’t accept one or two sponsorships, for products he’s already using and approves of. It’s easy money without having to compromise on integrity.

    Chris,

Thanks for the reply. I tend to agree with you. I was always under the impression that no tour player pays for any clubs! But maybe that’s only if you’re accepting some level of sponsorship from the manufacturer? Moore is the only player I’m aware of that’s doing the “no sponsors” thing, so maybe he really is paying on his own. Either way, I think he’s crazy to throw away easy money.
